As the temperatures drop and the leaves changes, it’s time to pull out your fall wardrobe. Sweaters, leggings, coats and scarves make it easy to dress for the season. But what happens when you get invited to a fall wedding where it’s too cold to wear a sundress and sandals?
Deciding what to wear to a fall wedding might seem intimidating at first. But with a few simple tips you’ll be able to be stylish without freezing your butt off or looking seasonally confused. I also shared how to do this in this post for the holiday season.
In partnership with Chicwish, I wore this navy dress to a recent wedding, and I was complimented on it before, during, and on the way home from the wedding. It ticks all the boxes for a fall wedding and is super flattering. Plus the fun star print can’t be beat.
Keep reading for all you need to know when deciding what to wear to a fall wedding and some options that tick the boxes if you’re in the market for a wedding outfit.

Look for length
One of the easiest ways to both stay warm and not look like an underdressed fool is to pick a dress in a longer length. Midi dresses are my favorite for fall weddings. They still feel flirty and feminine without showing a ton of leg.
The other place to look for length is in the sleeves. Having long sleeves when it’s chilly saves you an extra layer and means you don’t have to cover up your whole outfit with a jacket or sweater.
Pick fall colors
Think deep colors when you’re dressing for a fall wedding. I particularly love navy (like the dress I wore in this post), deep green, burgundy and burnt orange.
Go with thicker fabrics
One of the keys for finding what to wear to a fall wedding is to consider the fabric. If you’re wearing a thin, flimsy material, you might look amazing but you’ll be miserably cold. Look for a thicker fabric like velvet or go something that’s got a few layers.
Consider pants
A great pair of pants or a jumpsuit will keep you warm and can look super stylish. If you’re going to wear pants, make sure that you pick a pair that fits really well or get them tailored. I really love a super chic velvet jumpsuit.
