This pandemic doesn’t just affect how we work or whether we have jobs. It also affects how we interview. With closed offices, remote employees, and social distancing, interviews are now moving online. Besides all the interview prep, there’s the question of what to wear for a Zoom interview.
First thing – yes, you should wear pants. While working remotely has it’s perks (no one can see you’re wearing leggings), you’ll still want to dress your best for your Zoom interview. Not only do you want to be presentable on camera, you’ll want to feel prepared and look the part.
Read on for a few essential tips for what to wear for a Zoom interview. And good luck!

DRESS LIKE YOU’RE IN PERSON
The worst mistake you can make is not dressing like you’re going in to the office to interview. If your interviewer can see that you haven’t put in the effort to dress well for your video interview, how much effort do you assume they’ll think you put into your work? Make sure you’re dressing appropriately for the job. You’ll want to show that you have an understanding of company culture and are professional – whether that means a blazer or nice top. If you’re interviewing for a creative position, you can check out my recommendations in this post.
PICK A SIMPLE TOP
Video can be very unforgiving. When it comes to deciding what to wear for a Zoom interview, avoid patterns at all costs. Pattern can sometimes read weirdly over video. You don’t want to give your potential boss a headache during the interview. My recommendation is to stick to something in a solid color. I went with this white top (super similar style in the US here), it does have some lace detail, but I checked before that it works on camera. Also double check it isn’t see through! Otherwise pick something simple and avoid super bright colors. Some good color choices include: blue, white, or black.
WEAR SHOES
It might not seem like a big deal when no one will see your legs, but there’s something about wearing shoes that makes the interview feel so official. I wore this pair of Chanel dupes. Make sure the shoes you wear are appropriate for your interview. If you were going into the office and would wear a block heel, do that for your interview too. I promise you’ll sit a little taller in your chair.
CHECK FOR GLARE
If you wear glasses, double check the lighting to make sure you don’t have any glare. It’s super important that the interviewer can see your eyes considering you can’t meet in person. If you find there’s glare, move your light sources around. Ideally, set up a lamp diagonally to your right and left to make sure you’re well lit.
KEEP YOUR MAKEUP SIMPLE
While TV cameras can require more makeup, that isn’t the look you want to go for when it comes to a Zoom interview. You’ll want to look presentable, but avoid layering on extra makeup. An overly contoured face or heavy eye makeup won’t read well on a video conference. Mascara and some light eyeliner is my recommendation. Stick to natural colors, but wear enough to feel like your most confident self.
