While I’m probably too obsessed with fall, I have to admit that I do get a little sad putting my summer dresses and skirts away. Summer always passes so quickly, and I never feel like I really get enough wear out of my summer wardrobe. The temperatures here in Amsterdam have been fluctuating between the mid 50s and low 70s, which is the perfect temperature to learn how to transition summer dresses and skirts to fall.
I got really lucky last week. My friend invited me down to her boyfriend’s flower fields to see the dahlias in bloom. I had no idea there were still flowers blooming in the Netherlands after the tulips, so I had to go even though I was coming down with a cold. Since the temperature was doing that weird fall thing where it’s cold in the mornings and feels like summer in the afternoon, I figured I would whip out a summer skirt.
In order to best transition summer dresses and skirts to fall, reach for something in a midi length. Avoid prints and colors that are too summery. Instead, go with something in a darker color like this polka dot number. The easiest way to transition your dress or skirt is to throw a sweater over the top. I added a western belt around the waist so the look wasn’t too bulky. Ankle boots and a felt hat help to ground the look in the current season.
It’s really pretty easy to transition summer dresses and skirts to fall, as long as all of the accessories you add feel seasonally appropriate. Think chunky knits, boots, and accessories that are already trending for fall.
How do you like to transition your summer dresses and skirts to fall? I’m making a conscious point of getting more use out of my summer wardrobe before it gets too cold!
