Jon and I leave for Marrakech, Morocco in two days, and I could not be more excited. This is the trip I got to choose for my birthday, so I’ve been planning and prepping since March. My travel Pinterest board is chock full of Morocco images and guides. Even though it’s my first time visiting, I figured I’d put together a packing list for Morocco because it’s a bit of a special case.
One of the things I’ve researched a lot about Morocco is the dress. Whenever I travel, I want to be mindful of the culture, both for my safety and out of respect. Since Morocco is a Muslim country, this means covering shoulders and knees. Headscarves aren’t necessary for tourists, although I’ll be bringing a scarf along in case I feel I need it. I’ve heard that tourists can get away with showing more skin, but I’d much rather be respectful of the culture. We will also be there for the first day of Ramadan when it’s especially important to cover up.
Below, see the items I’m including in my suitcase for our five day trip to Morocco.
- Two Long Dresses – The most essential thing on my packing list for Morocco. Long dresses are the easiest way to make sure you don’t show too much skin. I’m bringing two, one long sleeve mustard Missoni look-alike and one cap-sleeve cotton dress that screamed Morocco to me from the racks at Zara.
- Two Midi Dresses – I’ll also be bringing along two midi dresses that cover my knees and have short sleeves. It’s going to be close to 90 when we’re in Morocco, so these may provide a little more relief from the heat than my maxis.
- Lightweight Pants – I picked up this great pair of wide-leg white pants from H&M a month ago, and I feel they’re perfect for Morocco. I’m going to pair them with a mock neck tank, but I’m bringing a scarf to tie around my shoulders, as well.
- Sandals & Flats – I’ll be pairing my dresses with some comfy sandals and my favorite straw flats from H&M, since we aren’t planning any strenuous activities.
- A Sunhat – I just picked this one up, and I’m obsessed with it. It has a wide enough brim to provide some cover from the hot sun, but it’s also not a giant floppy beach hat
- A One-Piece Swimsuit – We haven’t decided yet if we are going to do a pool day at La Mamounia, so I’m bringing along this one-piece just in case. It’s also great for a quick dip in the pool at our riad.
- A Scarf – I already mentioned above that I’ll be bringing a scarf to cover my shoulders or head if I feel it necessary. It’s an essential item for traveling to a Muslim country.
I’m sticking to a fairly neutral color palette with this packing list for Morocco. I’ve been so inspired by the combination of earth tones and colorful tiles I’ve been seeing in pictures that I don’t want my outfits competing with our surroundings. I’m so incredibly excited for this trip, and I can’t wait to share our experiences and the images we capture.
Keep an eye out for my Marrakech post after our trip!
Xx, Kelsey
