One month in Amsterdam. One month in another country. One month in a new job. A new apartment. A new language. The list goes on. Sometimes I can’t believe I moved all all the way to Europe. But other times it feels so real and so natural.
I’ve always been an adventurous, (semi)spontaneous person, and this move was the perfect fit. Not to mention I had the support of my amazing boyfriend, Jon, the entire way. I’m not sure I could have done this on my own, if only because I would have stressed myself out so much. It also helped to jump straight into work at 72andsunny. Getting into a routine is the best way to adjust to a new location. It’s how I settled into New York when I first moved, and it worked here, as well.
I have to say that Amsterdam was a really easy transition. Everyone here speaks English and is super friendly. Jon’s brother and his family are only a two hour train ride away, and technology makes it so easy to keep in touch with everyone back home.
Things about the transition that haven’t been easy? Getting a bank account, figuring out the rules of the bike path (I’ve only nearly died approx. 6 times), making friends. It’s not a cake walk at all. Several times we went to the grocery or a restaurant and couldn’t pay because they only take debit cards, which we couldn’t get until we were registered as residents.
But I’m settling in. Work has been crazy (as advertising tends to be), but I’m finding my groove. I can successfully ride my bike all over the city, am learning the good restaurants, seeing the sights, and even have some travel coming up.
It’s been one helluva ride, but I’m so happy to be here and to have the opportunity to experience Europe. And I’m excited that I now have a place to share it with everyone. Feel free to follow along.
Hope you enjoy. Xx.
