A few weeks ago, I teased in this post that we had a second big announcement coming. Today is the day to finally share. We’ve adopted a sweet little puppy, and she finally came home last night. Welcome, Jolene (Jojo for short)!
Jon and I had been talking about getting a puppy for a while. In fact, that played a role in our search for a new apartment. We wanted to find a new space that would give us the option to have pets. Having a pet has been something we’ve wanted for years, but we needed to be in the right apartment.
Once we signed the lease, we started perusing adoption sites. On January 8th, we spotted a new litter on the Best Friends Foundation Bulgaria Instagram account. The puppies were so cute and expected to grow to be medium-sized. When we saw our little girl’s face, we knew she was the one for us.
Best Friends Foundation rescues stray dogs, vaccinates them, and finds them homes. Bulgaria has a big stray dog problem, so there are always puppies and dogs coming in. We had to wait a full month to take Jolene home. The foundation has them vaccinated and gives them all the proper medication for things like heartworms. Once they are determined to be healthy and well, they’re sent on their way.
On Sunday we rented a car and drove to Dortmund, Germany for the pickup. The foundation drives the adopted pets from Bulgaria to a few different pickup locations. We were the very last on the route. Unfortunately, our pickup ended up during the snowiest day in the Netherlands and Germany. We took it nice and slow, and I’m so grateful for Jon’s great driving.
Jolene was very nervous at pickup and had stepped in poop in her crate. It was a very long, very smelly 3 hour drive home. But we made it in one piece with no accidents. After a good bath and some food, Jolene started to settle in.
We are so excited to welcome Jolene into our family as the third member. There will be plenty of puppy content coming your way, so make sure to follow along on my account, @kelseyybarnes, and at Jolene’s new account, @jojoinams.
Xx, Kelsey
