Or more accurately we’ve moved! Don’t worry, my friends, we were just moving within Amsterdam. We’ve moved within the city to find a new place to be comfortable and happy for the next year or more. If you read last week’s Friday Favorites, this is one of the two big things I teased. The next announcement will come in a few weeks!
We spent the last three years in our apartment in De Pijp. When we originally moved to Amsterdam, we wanted to get settled right away. Within the first two weeks of living in Amsterdam, we jumped on our apartment. It was a new building (a rarity in Amsterdam) and felt so quiet to us after living in NYC.
For the first two and a half years, it served us so well. We made so many memories in that place. I remember babysitting Jon’s niece and nephew as the yelled “Train!” each time the tram passed by. I remember my parents coming to stay to see the tulip fields. There were countless visits from friends.
I’ve been working from home as a freelancer for a few years now, so I was very used to spending all day in that apartment. But with the pandemic, many things changed. Jon joined me in working from home. I love having him around all day (I used to get so lonely), but we quickly realized our place wasn’t optimized for two people to work from home.
Additionally, with various lockdowns everyone in Amsterdam started spending much more time outside. For us, this meant more noise outside our apartment in a busy area. We were also inundated with construction work happening at all hours of the days and night on our block.
In the end, we were constantly stressed and anxious based on our living situation. Moving within Amsterdam to a quieter, more peaceful space was a natural choice. We’ve been looking at apartments for several months, waiting for the right one to come on the market.
In the end, we found it. We’ve relocated to an apartment with a canal view, and I already feel so much more at peace. We now have separate work spaces, which will hopefully help us focus and disconnect when we finish work for the day. The noise level is to be determined, but after our first day here, I’m optimistic.
For those of you curious about moving within Amsterdam, now is a great time. Due to the pandemic and a lack of expats moving in, furnished apartments are dropping rent prices. We used Student Verhuis Service to help us getting everything up the Dutch stairs. We didn’t have a ton of stuff, so they were super affordable and quick.
I’m very excited to have a furnished apartment that is a little less strict than our last so I can do some decorating and make it feel like home. Are you all interested in home content? Leave a comment if you do! I’m going to be doing a lot of work around here to make it comfy.
Xx, Kelsey
