Around this time each year I get the urge to light my pumpkin candles and start transitioning my wardrobe to fall. When we lived in the Netherlands, the weather was always starting to shift already. It’s still hot in NYC, but that isn’t stopping me from dreaming about my fall 2022 wardrobe. Fall fashion is my absolute favorite, and I’m already combing through online retailers looking for the best items of the season.
Fall fashion is the best because it allows for more layers, which means more chances to play with your look. Plus it’s not so cold that you’re covering everything up with a coat and scarf. This time of year, retailers put out some of their best pieces, and inspiration is abundant with New York Fashion Week. It’s a prime time to start your fall 2023 wardrobe and prep your closet for the months ahead.
Below are the 12 items I recommend starting your fall 2022 wardrobe with. These are all pieces I’ve already bought or have my eye on, so they have the kelseyybarnes seal of approval for the season. - Plaid skirt – As always, plaid is trending for fall. This midi is so fun, lightweight, and easy to style. I’m going to get a lot of use out of it!
- Ballet flats – If you haven’t already heard, ballet flats are back in a major way. They’re the perfect item to add to your fall wardrobe because they go with literally everything. Go with something classic like black are nude or have fun and add a pop of color to your fall fits.
- Floral maxi dress – I love love a floral maxi paired with boots this time of year. It’s perfect for transitioning from season to season. You can also get a lot of wear out of it by throwing a chunky sweater over top and belting it.
- Ladylike jacket – This item is available for presale and is majorly calling my name. It’s giving Chanel vibes at a fraction of the cost.
- Lug sole boots – The minute I saw these boots as part of the Nordstrom sale, I knew they would be perfect for my fall 2022 wardrobe. Lug soles are great because they’re trendy but also practical for the unpredictable fall weather. FYI this pair fits tight in the calves.
- Leather bag – I love adding a trendier bag to my fall lineup, and this bag is just gorgeous. I have the raffia version from summer and fell in love when I saw this in stores recently.
- Wide-leg trousers – Wide-leg trousers are a must for your fall 2022 wardrobe. They’ll make any outfit easily look more on-trend. Recommend pairing with a cozy knit and sneakers.
- Embroidered blouse – I have been meaning to pull the trigger on this gorgeous blouse. It will pair so perfectly with a denim skirt now and my favorite wide-leg jeans later.
- Striped sweater – Every year there’s a new striped sweater that catches my eye. This one will get you all the way from fall to next spring.
- Chic coat – We may not be ready for full winter coats, so something at a shorter length is perfect for the fall months. This houndstooth pattern is to die for and just screams FALL.
- Cozy sweatshirt – Let’s be honest, we’re all going to live in sweatshirts and leggings pretty soon. Considering I own at least two right now, I can confirm these sweatshirts are so cozy. I love the colors of this one for fall.
- Straight-leg jeans – Levi’s 501s have been trending for a while. I’m looking to start my fall 2022 wardrobe with a pair in the dark wash.
