Wintertime just isn’t complete without ice skating in NYC. The city boasts an array of gorgeous ice rinks, both indoor and outdoor, where you can enjoy this wintertime activity. Many of the rinks are located in areas with incredible city views. There are also often Christmas markets or other holiday activities nearby if you’re visiting at Christmas time. From iconic Rockefeller Center to lesser-known gems, there’s a rink for every style.
As a former competitive ice dancer, it’s been my mission to test out the rinks throughout the city. While I haven’t visited them all (there are a surprising number for such a small land mass), I’ve been able to discover some of the very best options. Keep reading for all the best places to go ice skating in NYC this winter.

The NYC Classic
When you think of ice skating in NYC, you probably picture skaters taking a turn around the rink in Central Park. Wollman Rink is one of the best ice skating rinks in NYC both for its iconic location and size. This rink allows for a lot more skaters than the other rinks in the city. It’s such an absolute classic and worth a visit.
Price: $35
Why it’s worth it: A bigger rink means more room to skate. Plus the location is a NY institution.
The Most Iconic
The Rink at Rockefeller Center is by far the most iconic ice rink in NYC. It’s also one of the smaller locations! I definitely recommend booking yourself an early time slot – even at 8:30am, it was pretty packed. There won’t be a ton of room for zipping around, but it’s absolutely worth it for the bucket list experience! Don’t forget to check out the Saks Fifth Avenue light show and Rockefeller Christmas market while there.
Price: $11-65 (range based on the popularity of time slots)
Why it’s worth it: It doesn’t get more iconic than this location!
The Most Festive
Bryant Park Winter Village is the ultimate Christmas destination and a perfect place to go ice skating in NYC. This rink is the ultimate experience with a Christmas tree, holiday market, and a rink surrounded by skyscrapers. Bonus point – it’s free if you have your own skates!
Price: $15-50 (covers skate rentals and based on the time of day)
Why it’s worth it: This rink is the full package with plenty of activities aside from just ice skating.
The Indoor Option
The Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers is a great option if you’re looking for some indoor skating. With two sheets of NHL-sized ice, the rink is open year-round for hockey and figure skating. This is the perfect spot if you’re looking for lessons to hone your skills on the ice.
Price: $30-50 depending on the session type
Why it’s worth it: This rink is open year-round and offers options for lessons
The Brooklyn Option
I have to admit I haven’t been to the Lefrak Center rink yet, but it’s on my list. My brother, who is also a figure skater, said it’s a really fun location. Part is covered and part is outdoors, so there are a ton of options. Also a great one if you’re located in Brooklyn.
Price: $9.50-20
Why it’s worth it: The super picturesque location in Prospect Park
