To be honest I was very wary of the return of the bike shorts trend. The 90s trend popularized by Princess Diana has been back in full force on celebrities and influencers alike. In theory, the look is super cute. But what happens when you don’t have stick-thin thighs? The good news is I’m hear to tell you how to wear bike shorts so they’re actually flattering.
I grew up as a competitive figure skater. While that means I developed a fairly lean figure, it also means I developed muscular thighs. It’s unavoidable with the sport. Normally I would shy away from a trend that highlights my thighs as much as bike shorts. But after seeing them all over Instagram, I decided to give it a try just in case.
My initial try-on of this Nike pair had me very uncertain. They just weren’t flattering to my legs. Determined to still make them work, I jumped on H&M and ordered an oversized t-shirt. Throwing it over my shorts, it hit at just the right point to make my legs look so much more flattering.
And that my friends is the key to how to wear bike shorts. Look for a t-shirt or top that hits a little longer – top or mid-thigh is ideal. I personally like a men’s large t-shirt like this one for a roomy fit a la Diana. There are also several oversized women’s t-shirts that are a slimmer cut. And if you’re looking to dress your bike shorts up, find a boyfriend blazer that hits mid-thigh.
Check out some of my favorite bike shorts and oversized top options below. You’ll be rocking this trend in no time.
