As fall slowly starts to turn into winter here in Amsterdam, my outfits tend to trend towards more and more sweaters. It’s pretty easy to fall into the sweater + jeans rut (I’m totally guilty of it). If you’re looking for a way to change that combo up, it pays to take a look at sweater trends for the year.
One of this year’s big fall trends that will continue into winter is the return of the sweater dress. In all honesty, I’ve been wearing sweater dresses every winter since moving to the Netherlands. When you live in a country where winter stretches on for months and months, it makes sense to start finding more ways to wear your sweaters.
There are so many options when it comes to how to wear a sweater dress. I partcularly love styling them casually because I work from home. But they can also easily be dressed up.
Below I’m sharing how to wear a sweater dress, plus some of my favorite styles for 2020. Keep reading, and if you like this post, please consider sharing it on your socials so others can enjoy it too!

The Casual Look
When it comes to how to wear a sweater dress, casual is my favorite way to go. The outfit formula is as easy as sweater dress + black tights + flat boots. From there the options are limitless. Pair a sporty sweater dress with hiking boots. Combine a ruffled sweater dress with pointy-toe booties. You can pretty much create any look you want while staying comfy and warm. The Party Look
Who else hates being cold for holiday parties? Don’t get me wrong, I love a holiday mini dress. But sometimes I just want to be warm enough to fully enjoy the celebrations. Enter the party sweater dress. Look for fun details like embellishments, cutouts, and mesh. Again, pair your sweater dress with black tights, but this time, throw on heels or a heeled boot to elevate your look. Also the perfect option for virtual parties/celebrating at home because you’ll still be comfortable. See more of this look here.
The Midi Look
Looking for how to wear a sweater dress in the most 2020 way? Grab yourself a midi length style and pair it with knee high boots or a chunky chelsea boot. This form-fitting style is all over Instagram, but in all honesty, my favorite thing about this length is that it feels like wearing a blanket all day long. Perfect for working from home in comfort (and style!).
