While living abroad in Amsterdam, I came to understand the power of a great pant. European wardrobes are usually smaller than American ones, which means each piece has to be special. More often than not, a pair of statement pants is one of those special pieces. The women in Europe know how to style statement pants so they look incredibly chic. The key is that European women don’t try too hard, so they don’t risk looking overdone.
Whether a fun print, bold color, or interesting silhouette, statement pants will bring so much life to your look. Below are some tips that will make it a breeze to style statement pants like a chic European and some photos of how I’ve styled my favorite statement pants.

The best pairs of statement pants
Pick a well-tailored pair
The first tip for styling your statement pants is to ensure you buy a quality pair. European women are all about quality, and it makes a difference. A pair of well-tailored pants will completely change your look for the better. Look for thicker fabrics and double-check that the zippers and buttons aren’t cheaply made. I personally think a more structured fit is the way to go. My favorite place to pick up tailored statement pants is the french brand, Sézane.
Balance your proportions
If you’re going with a pair of wide-leg statement pants, you’re going to want to wear a more fitted top. But if your pants are more fitted, you’re going to want to wear something up top that has volume. This play. on proportions will keep your outfit from looking frumpy.
Go neutral on top
If you’re going to style statement pants that have a loud pattern, I usually recommend pairing them with a neutral top. A camel-colored sweater, white blouse, or black turtleneck will all allow your statement pants to shine.
Or go bold
If you’re brave, I love a good print-mixing or color-blocking situation. The key to print-mixing is to find a color in common. For example, if blue is the primary color in your patterned pants, look for a top that also has that shade of blue in the pattern. The opposite holds true if you’re wearing bright solid pants. Then you’ll want to color-block with a shade that’s opposite on the color wheel.
Minimize accessories
I personally love when a statement pant has a moment to shine, so I always keep my accessories to a minimum. A beautiful leather bag and neutral boots are a great way to enhance your statement pants rather than detract from them.
Be smart about your coat
If you’re wearing statement pants in the winter, pick a coat that compliments them. I personally love something on the longer side, but you can also make a cropped style work as long as it hits at your waistband. I also recommend going with neutrals or solid colors for your coat so it doesn’t take away from your fabulous pants.
