Growing up as a figure skater, I spent most of my days in a cold ice rink. I needed to dress warmly without a lot of bulk that would restrict my movements. After so many years, I learned how to layer for winter like a total pro.
Nothing is worse than being cold, but layering up until you feel like a snowman isn’t comfortable either. Being warm doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fashion or your figure. All it takes is a few simple tips. Keep reading for the easy ways to layer for winter without added bulk.

Start with a thin base layer
The number one mistake people make when layering for winter is adding bulky items on top of each other. Always start with a thin base layer. Depending on how cold it is, you can go with my favorite classic tissue turtleneck or a thin thermal layer if you need extra warmth for being outside.
Add thicker layers as you go
My rule of thumb is to get thicker with your layers as you layer. If you try to put a thin layer over one that’s thicker, you’re going to end up looking like a stuffed sausage. For this look, I layered a thin shacket (EU) over my turtleneck. When I was training, this is when I would add a thin workout jacket (EU). You can even add a thicker sweater (EU) here!
The same applies for the bottom layers
On particularly cold days, I’ll throw a pair of black tights under my pants. Again, avoid a thick pair, which will add bulk. Even though your layers feel thin, once they’re all on top of each other they’ll trap heat. If it’s not too cold, just throw on some super warm socks with a thicker pair of pants.
Top it off with a belted coat
You can always go oversized, but I find that a wrap coat (EU) with a belt will better define your silhouette even with multiple layers. Don’t have a wrap coat? Grab a belt and secure it around the waist of your favorite coat. It’s a very chic look, while making your figure look great.
Accessorize for the weather
My dad always told me growing up that you lose 90% of your body heat through your head. I don’t know if that’s actually true, but I always make sure to wear a knitted hat or headband on particularly cold days. Other great winter accessories that will tie your look together while adding warmth include leather gloves (EU), a cozy scarf (EU) and chunky boots (EU).
And there you have it. With these tips you’ve learned how to layer for winter like a pro. Now get out there and enjoy that cold weather!
