Oops, I’ve been a little behind on my Friday Favorites posts. To be fair, the week before last, I shared my summer bucket list instead, which is pretty fun. And this past week, I got a chance to go to the beach. Knowing how the weather here can be, I wasn’t about to pass that up to stress about writing a blog post. Although if I had stayed home to write, I wouldn’t have ended up with such a bad sunburn. Yikes!
This week was a bit of a weird one because it was the Fourth of July. Jon and I have missed several American holidays while we’ve been here, including Halloween and Thanksgiving. Weirdly, this one made me more sad. I think it’s because I was already having a bit of a rough week. After spending the first few days of this week really stressed out about my job situation and feeling pretty lost, I was finally able to get out of that funk yesterday. Next week, I’m going to do a post about how I did that.
But it felt pretty weird to be here in Amsterdam for the Fourth. It was just a regular old day here with Jon at work and me at home. I could see everyone starting to celebrate online and was insanely jealous of all the BBQs and fireworks. But if I’m being really honest, that jealousy didn’t last too long. I LOVE being in Amsterdam, and I am so so blessed to be here. It’s a beautiful thing that I grew up in a country where I am allowed to leave and experience life in another country, yet always have the option to come back.
I hope you all had a wonderful week celebrating the Fourth, and that your Friday goes quickly so you can start enjoying the weekend ASAP.
Xx, Kelsey
FRIDAY FAVORITES: WEEK 6, 7 & 8
I shared this week that I’ve been on a shopping freeze. It has honestly had me feeling absolutely crazy. Thankfully I have the sweetest boyfriend who is willing to buy me things from time to time (as long as they’re Nike).
I confessed to Jon the other day that I think these Fila dad shoes are kind of cute. He about lost it! I think it’s because they’re super popular among the Dutch girls, and I’ve been influenced more and more by their style. He insisted that he’d rather buy me this pair of Nike dad shoes rather than have me walking around in Filas. This is what working with Nike does to you. And they actually just arrived this morning, so I’m sharing what they look like on my IG stories.
I also had Jon pick up this pair of leggings for me. I’ve been in need of a new high-waisted pair for spin classes, and Nike actually had these marketed as spin-specific in store. They’re suuuuper stretchy, so I went down a size and got a small. They’re mostly sold out except bigger sizes in the US, but available in all sizes on the NL site.
All of these summer sales have been KILLING me while I’m on this freeze. Yesterday, I walked through H&M because everyone once in a while I have to buy some teeny tiny thing so I don’t go crazy. I picked up these round sunglasses because they were marked down to one euro. No joke! I can’t decide if they’re a little silly looking, but for one euro, who cares!
Yesterday, I visited the Museum Willet-Holthuysen. With some encouragement from Jon, I’m going to start getting out and seeing more small museums here in Amsterdam. I have the Museumkaart, which means unlimited access to all the museums for the year, so I should use it while I have the time. Plus, it’s something I can do without spending money. The museum I saw yesterday was really cool. It’s an old canal house that is furnished like it would have been in the 1800s. No one lives like that anymore and most of those buildings are now businesses. I’m so glad I went and saw it. Highly recommend!
If I were shopping right now, I think I’d really want to do another Shein haul. I’ve been eyeing two-piece sets like this one lately. And I’d love to get a little easy white dress.
At the beginning of this week, Jon and I watched the movie Brain on Fire on Netflix. I read this book after my mom recommended it to me, so I was super excited to see they made a movie out of it. I suffer from chronic migraines, which doctors still know so little about, so it was really interesting to watch this movie. In the film, the main character has a medical condition that no one can figure out. Doctors keep telling her she’s just stressed and drinking too much. I found the whole thing really fascinating, especially since the book is a true, first person account.
Speaking of reading, why are books so expensive? When I was feeling down earlier this week, I figured a good book would help me escape. Instead of buying a new book, I turned to one of my all-time favorites from middle school, The Goose Girl. It’s based on a Brother’s Grimm fairy tale, and always makes me smile. It’s also a super easy and quick read. I finished it within two days. I also just learned that the author wrote a few more books to make it a series. You might find my inner 13-year-old Kelsey nerding out over these this weekend.
