If you follow along on Instagram, chances are you’ve heard me talk about my favorite The Ordinary products. A few years ago when I was out of a job here in Amsterdam, I had to figure out how to match my love for skincare with my literally non-existent budget. When I discovered that The Ordinary (EU) provided single-ingredient, science-based products that didn’t break the bank, I was sold. Most of their products come in under $10, which meant I could afford to keep taking care of my skin without spending money I didn’t have.
It’s been a few years, and I’m still a fan of The Ordinary. I’ve found their products to be effective for my acne-prone skin. The only downside to The Ordinary is that it can be hard to figure out which products are best for your skin. The website is very science-based but does have a helpful routine tool here. Through some trial, error, and a lot of research, I’ve found the below to be my favorite The Ordinary products.
Check them out, and remember to always patch test and don’t go overboard by using too many high-strength products at once. And if you’re looking for more skincare, check out my winter skincare routine in this post.
Xx, Kelsey
- Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG (EU) – This is one of my all-time favorite The Ordinary products because it works so quickly and effectively. The high dose of caffeine tightens and reduces undereye puffiness instantly. You can literally feel it tighten after application. I use this serum every morning to help with my sleepy eyes. Note that it’s not a moisturizing product, so won’t help with keeping your undereye hydrated.
- Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution (EU) – This is my other favorite The Ordinary product by a landslide. I’ve always suffered with acne, which hasn’t really changed as I’ve gotten older. When I was a teen, I would get glycolic acid peels regularly. Adding this toner to my routine was a game-changer for my breakouts. I always notice breakouts pop up when I stop using it. Acne is a very individual experience, but this toner has been what’s helped me the most.
- Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (EU) – Acids can be very drying, so it’s important to hydrate the skin often. Because I use always go through my moisturizing serums quickly, I love how affordable and simple this one is. Plus it doesn’t make me greasy and oily throughout the day like the cult favorite Buffet does.
- Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (EU) – Retinoids and retinols are super popular in skincare at the moment. And for good reason. This is one I’m careful about mixing with other strong exfoliators. Since my skin has been dry this winter, I’ve paused on this product. Once things start warming up, I’ll switch out some of my glycolic acid use for this one.
- Alpha Arbutin 2% + AH (EU) – This product has been amazing for dark spots and scars left by acne. In fact, after a few days of application in the morning, my dark spots were less noticeable. I also love that there is hyaluronic acid in this product because you can never have too much moisture!
- Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (EU) – Another great product for reducing the appearance of blemishes and congestion. Niacinamide is an ingredient the beauty industry is obsessed with for its anti-aging and brightening effects.
- AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution (EU) – This peeling solution is probably the number one The Oridinary cult favorite. It’s a very strong solution and shouldn’t be left on for longer than 10 minutes. I don’t use this super often just because it is such a strong exfoliator, but I’ve heard great things from those who use it more often. Not recommended for sensitive skin or newbies to acid use.
