Friends, it’s September! And here in the Netherlands it’s already crisp and chilly. I’ll admit I’m 100% basic when it comes to fall. I absolutely thrive this time of year. One of my favorite things about this time of year is shopping for fall trends. I love seeing what’s hot when it comes to boots, sweaters, and coats.
But if you know me, I also like to keep things classic. I’m all about shopping smart and building a capsule wardrobe. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with the hottest fall 2020 trends. It’s what makes this season so fun before we all bundle up in coats and no one sees our outfits any longer.
The thing to keep in mind when you’re buying into fall 2020 trends is not too spend too much money on something that’s got a short life. A few things, like thick-soled chelsea boots will probably last through another season or two. But save those extra $$ for the classic pieces that are going to last you for years and years (more about that in this post).
Keep reading for my favorite fall 2020 trends and let me know what you’ll be shopping for in the comments!

Chunky Chelsea Boots
This trend started last fall, and I wasn’t so sure about it at first. But seeing it return this year in the form of this Prada pair, I’m jumping in. I bought this affordable pair (EU) recently, and not going to lie they felt huge when I first put them on. But after pairing them with a cute dress, I’m totally sold. You’re going to see these boots everywhere this year.
Sweater Dresses
Figure-hugging sweater dresses were all over the fall runways, and I’m so excited for it. Sweater dresses are the ultimate item for a comfy, yet put together fall look. Plus they take zero effort to throw on.
Leather Everything
Leather (or faux!) has been popular for a few seasons now. In particular, leather coats, skirts, and pants will be popular this season. Pro tip, if you’re going to invest in real leather, stick to coats. I have a pair of real leather pants, and they’ve stretched out with no way of shrinking them back to size.
Sweater Vests
Honestly any trend with the word sweater in it has me convinced. Sweater vests are a fun way to change up your sweater game. The preppy college version of me is just loving that this is in. Throw it over a midi dress or an oversized button down.
Oversized Collars
This trend started showing up this spring and will continue into fall. You’ll find them on dresses and blouses this season. If you want to be super trendy, throw a blouse under a sweater vest and let the giant collar peek over.
Riding Boots
Riding boots were my jam for years, and I’m so happy they’re back. They were seen all over runways this year, and I’m excited to announce they were even spotted paired with skinny jeans. It’s a classic combo I will be wearing to death this season.
Chains
Chains have been picking up recently and will continue through the fall season. Think chunky gold and silver pieces worn around necks or as an embellishment on bags, belts and shoes.
