You’ve probably been seeing this styling trick all over Instagram and TikTok without even realizing what it was. I know I was seeing it (and even employing it) before I knew its name. Coined by my favorite style publication, Who What Wear, the mirroring method is an easy styling trick for creating instantly chic outfits.
If you’re feeling that your outfits are a little blah (it happens to us all during these long winter months), this easy styling trick will instantly perk them up. The mirroring method is where accessories are carefully chosen in one pop of color to add visual interest to your outfit. It immediately adds a little oomph, drawing the eye up and down your outfit to sort of “connect the dots” between those pops of color. It also helps to make an outfit feel more cohesive with minimal effort.
To use the mirroring method, start with a neutral base. Living in NYC, I’m a big fan of an all-black base, but this also works with other neutrals like white, cream, or grey. My favorite way to employ the mirroring method is to match my shoes with another accessory like a scarf or bag. The key is to match accessories that are farther away from each other on your body, which will draw the eye through your outfit. Some classic combinations would be matching your:
- Shoes with your bag, hat or scarf
- Socks with your bag, hat or scarf (colored socks are very on trend right now)
- Bag with your hat or scarf
While this easy styling trick can absolutely be done with neutrals, such as matching black shoes with a black belt and scarf, the use of color is what really makes this styling trick pop. And since we’re seeing so many fun color trends this winter, it’s the perfect time to change things up. I particularly love baby blue, which will be trending into spring and summer. Shades of red from burgundy to cherry red are the hottest color of the season and make a great pair.
Below are some great pieces to get you started with the mirroring method. Give it a try next time you get dressed and see how this easy styling trick makes your outfit so much more interesting.
