In Amsterdam, winter always shows up far too early for my taste. By mid-November I’ve put away my leather jackets and trench coats in favor of wool coats and puffers. Considering we spend a good 5-6 months in coats here, I’ve become quite the coat connoisseur. I don’t think you can have too many coats if you live in a cold climate as I do. But even if you live in a warmer climate, it’s good to have at least one trusty winter coat for a particularly cold day or a trip to somewhere snowy.
Usually I think about winter coats as investment pieces. They should be able to carry you through multiple seasons. That being said, sometimes it’s time for an upgrade or maybe you just haven’t found THE coat. Personally, I’ve been in the market to replace my J. Crew cocoon coat that’s carried me through the past six years. So I’ve put together a list of the best winter coats for 2021. This list includes everything from the insanely practical puffer to the statement coat of the season. Whatever you’re looking for, there should be something that suits your taste in the below.

WINTER COATS FOR 2021
- Classic wool coat (EU) – I have had the J. Crew cocoon coat for literally 6+ years, and it has never failed. It’s warm, but leaves enough room for layering. Plus, it comes in so many colors that something is sure to catch your eye.
- Long puffer (EU) – The Uniqlo puffer has been a godsend in the Amsterdam cold. Plus it’s my favorite to pack for ski trips. The longer length is perfect for keeping your legs warm, and the hood is great for unexpected rain showers. This is definitely the most practical of the winter coats for 2021.
- Camel wrap coat (Similar style in the EU) – The camel coat has been trending for a few years now, and 2021 is no exception. Camel is one of my favorite colors because it makes everything look luxe. This version from Mango is budget friendly, but looks more expensive due to the color.
- Teddy coat (EU) – Teddy coats are sticking around, and now they’re popping up in a variety of colors. I’m partial to the white version, which screams cozy winter vibes to me.
- Leather look (EU) – As far as winter coats for 2021 go, you can’t go wrong with faux leather. Faux leather puffer coats are a great way to wear a puffer while still feeling incredibly chic. The leather look adds an element of sofistication, and you can find versions of all lengths and styles.
- Shearling (EU) – The 70s have been trending for the past year and aren’t going anywhere. The shearling coat is a great way to add texture and interest to your outerwear and definitely makes the list of best winter coats for 2021.
- Statement coat (US only) – I’ve had my eye on this checked wrap coat for a few months and may just pull the trigger come Black Friday. Statement coats are some of my favorites because they make any outfit more interesting. Plus when it’s truly cold, the only part of your outfit people will see is the coat anyway.
