If you’re in the US, Memorial Day marks the official start of summer. But often the weather doesn’t get that memo for a few weeks. Which makes it the perfect time to prep for summer. As the weather gets warmer, clothes, makeup and hair tend to get lighter. For me, summer also brings an element of hope and change. It’s probably due to all the summer breaks growing up, but I always feel like there’s so much possibility come summer.
The warm weather means you won’t be hiding under sweaters any longer, which means it’s time to take care of yourself and get into that summer mindset. Below you’ll find a comprehensive list to start your summer prep.
Here’s wishing you the best summer yet!

HOW TO PREP FOR SUMMER
Switch up your skincare – Now that winter is over, it’s time to put away your heavy moisturizers and switch to something a little lighter for summer. While you’re at it, this is a great time to switch to some lighter makeup. I love this cc cream that provides coverage without being heavy. And if you haven’t been using SPF, do so immediately.
Start to exfoliate – There’s a lot of buildup under those sweater and leggings all winter long. Slough off those dead skin cells to feel fresh and renewed for bare shoulder and leg season. A good coffee scrub will do the trick.
Get your glow on – Once you’ve exfoliated, it’s time to get your glow on. Self tanner is the perfect way to get some summer color without risking skin cancer. St Tropez is my current favorite because it provides the perfect golden brown shade. Check out my guide to self tanner so you can apply like a pro.
Get your hair healthy – Summer is tough on your hair. Chlorine and sun can wreak havoc, making your hair dry and brittle. I really love this shampoo for a good scalp scrub. And then follow up with a really great deep condition. Summer is also a great time to take a break from dry shampoo, which can build up on your scalp.
Eat right – I’m a believer that every body is a bikini body, but that doesn’t mean you should eat like crap. Summer is a great time to start eating more fruits and veggies and cutting back on all the heavy meals from the winter months.
Hydrate – Really a tip for all year round, but it’s even more important to drink enough water come summer. Sun and sweat will dry you out, so try and add an extra water bottle to your day.
Get physical – With the nicer weather, it’s time to get up and out. I love adding extra workout classes during the summer to keep my body active. Even if you’re not the workout type, go for an evening walk after dinner and get some fresh air.
Begin your summer wardrobe – If you haven’t already, it’s time to start shopping for summer clothes. Take a look at your closet and see what you wore most last year. Anything that’s looking a little worn should be replaced. And it’s a good time to pick up a few fun, trendy items. Check out this post on the best summer sunglasses and keep an eye out for my full summer shopping cart next week.
Find your beach reads – There’s something about all the lightness of summer that makes me want to read a light and easy book. Even if you’re not headed to the beach, you can pick up a good book instead of spending all evening glued to Netflix. I just started this book by the author of Big Little Lies. And if you liked Gone Girl or Girl on the Train, I recommend this book.
