When I first moved to NYC, one of my girlfriends said I should do a series on things I’m swapping to make my outfits more New York. I wasn’t so sure that was relevant because I was moving from Amsterdam where the women are so fashion-forward, and their style isn’t THAT different from New York women. But after being here for two months, I’ve come to realize I definitely dress differently in a few key ways. So keep reading for the 5 things I wear living in NYC.
Button downs
To be fair I wore my oversized button-down often in Amsterdam, but I’m wearing it so much more now. If you watch the women of New York, you’ll notice button-downs are a definite staple in their wardrobes.
Blazers
Partly because of the weather (we get much warmer spring days in NYC) and partly because it’s a huge trend here, but I’ve been wearing blazers more regularly. I particularly love an oversized blazer, but lately have also been gravitating toward fun tweed versions.
Loafers
Besides white sneakers, which are the shoe of choice for both Dutchies and New Yorkers, loafers are one of the top things I wear living in NYC. They provide the perfect balance of chic and comfortable. In a city where you have to walk EVERYWHERE, they’re totally worth investing in.
Oversized sunglasses
Women in Amsterdam are a lot more subtle and actually wear sunglasses a lot less often. In NYC I’ve really noticed how many women are wearing chic oversized sunglasses. It’s made me want to pull my favorite pairs back out.
Designer bags
To be fair, women in Amsterdam probably wear the same amount of designer items, but in NYC it’s so much more apparent. Logos are much more noticeable and a status item. I don’t have a ton of designer goods because I like to live on a realistic budget. However, I did treat myself to a Burberry bag for my 30th birthday that I’ve been wearing regularly in NYC.
