The start of the new year brings excitement for the new – including new fashion trends. After a tumultuous 2020, this rings true more than ever. We all need something to look forward to, and fashion can give us that bit of levity and excitement we crave.
My 2021 fashion predictions swing between two extremes. On one hand, you’re going to continue to see a lot of loungewear, especially since lockdowns will continue for the first part of the year. On the other hand, we’re going to see a resurrgance of dressing up for fun once things open again.

Loungewear will continue
Considering lockdowns are being extended in Europe and across the world, loungewear is going to continue to reign supreme in 2021. Staying cozy while working (and doing everything) from home will still be the case for the first part of this year. But with hope on the horizon, you’ll notice a lot more fun, embellished loungewear popping up for 2021.

Return of the Roaring 20’s
Editors have been hinting at a return to excess once things begin to open up. There’s a reason the roaring 20’s following the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. Later in 2021, we’re going to see oversized dresses, tulle, and sparkle make a return. We’ll all want to dress up and show off our fun side once things return to “normal.”

Quality over Quantity
For many of us, the various lockdowns made us realize how much unnecessary stuff we have. 2020 also made us take a look at what types of brands we’re supporting. In 2021, we’ll see a shift towards quality pieces from ethical brands instead of throwing away cash on fast fashion. In particular, sustainability will be front and center with more focus on protecting the planet.

Happy Colors
Pantone’s color of the year for 2021 is Illuminating Yellow, an appropriate choice as we emerge from the darkness of last year. In addition to yellow, bubblegum pink is going to be everywhere in fashion this year. After last year’s neutral loungewear, one of my 2021 fashion predictions is that bright, happy colors will be the breath of fresh air we all need.

Fitted Silhouettes
This is a trend that started to pick up in 2020 with fitted sweater dresses. In 2021, be prepared to see a range of fitted silhouttes. Think sky-high mini skirts, figure hugging slip dresses, and second-skin tops.
